WELCOME TO THE 2005 season here at beautiful Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. Opening day for what is the 40th anniversary season, or should we say opening days, take place at the drag strip on Saturday & Sunday, February 26 & 27. Plans for both days call for muffled domestic & import runs on Saturday starting at 9 am and unmuffled and muffled runs at 8 am on Sunday. Sunday you'll get 3 runs for $40. Thins get going seriously on Saturday & Sunday, March 5 & 6. That happening after unmuffled time shots on Wednesday night, March 2 and a muffled street race program on Friday, March 4. Saturday, March 5 should provide some real great racing when the opening round of the B.F. Goodrich Tires Street Wars '05 highlight the day's racing. To the uninformed, Street Wars means streetable U.S. muscle cars versus high tech imports in a challenge race format matching one type against the other. Mufflers are a must for all when racing on Saturdays. A $40 3 run test & tune, two brackets, and a gambler's race will round out the card on Sunday, March 6. On the same day racing will also take place on the eighth mile track. . . OPEN COMPETITION ELIMINATORS start on Sunday, March 13 with the start of the 2005 Sunoco Super Challenge Championship Points Series for both the quarter and eighth mile racers. Prior to that though, plenty of rubber will have been built up on the track for the Sunday racers, this after the '05 season debut of the popular Trophy Marathon series Saturday event concludes. . . AS MENTIONED PREVIOUSLY, the '05 Sunoco Super Challenge Championship Points Series for Raceway Park racers starts on Sunday, March 13. A reminder though to racers wanting to compete in the Sunoco series, you must sign up before racing in the series in order to earn any championship points. . . RESERVED SEAT TICKETS for the 2005 K&N Filters SuperNationals presented here at Raceway Park on June 16-19 are now on sale. Early ticket sales response to the NHRA POWERade championship tour race have been brisk, and if that response is an indicator, race fans are anxious to purchase tickets well in advance of the race. Reserved seats will be at a premium, now based on the fact that reserved seats will no longer be available for seating on the right side grandstands, also known as the west side grandstands. These seats are no longer reserved and will be offered as general admission seating on all four days of the event, with general admission tickets available at the gate on the days of the event. . . SPORT COMPACT EVENT director Javier Ortega reports that Raceway Park's big three sport compact events will happen once again, this in addition to a large number of other sport compact themed events. The big three Ortega speaks of are the 8th Annual Nitto Tires Extreme Sport Compact Springnationals on April 30 & May 1, the 9th Annual B.F. Goodrich Tires Summer Sport Compact Slam on July 2 & 3, and lastly the 6th Annual Sport Compact Fallnationals set for October 1 & 2. . . RACEWAY PARK'S YAMAHA backed 30th anniversary season gets underway on Sunday, March 13. While the track & pit area will be mobbed with racers and fans, one familiar face to all will be bowing out as general manager of the popular dirt track on that day. Longtime Raceway Park full time employee Ken Landerman will be turning over the keys to the MX facility to newly appointed general manager Rich Schmidt as Ken has decided to resign his position at Raceway Park and move on to other areas of interest in his life. Ken has been at the MX from the beginning 30 years ago and knows every inch of the course. He will be lending his expertise to Rich to make the transition smooth. Schmidt comes up from the racer ranks, was most recently the director of the Raceway Park School of Motocross and was at the top of the "A" list when the time came. We're sure we haven't seen the last of Ken at the MX though as he has MX dirt in his veins. . . IN ANOTHER CHANGE at the Raceway Park Motocross, track manager Richie Zupko also gave his notice at the end of the 2004 season. Richie had a rough schedule, juggling a full time profession and handling the MX all at the same time and something had to give. Unfortunately, it was the Raceway Park motocross position. Big shoes to fill, but Rich's replacement is up to the task. Pro MX'er Mickey Kessler takes over for Rich and will hit the ground running at the 2005 opener on March 13. Mickey is another guy with MX dirt in his veins. Kessler goes back to the early years of the track, and lives the sport as both a racer and the owner of Kessler Pro Suspension. We wish all four of these guys well and good luck with whatever the future holds. . . KARTING TRACK MANAGER Alex Napp has announced that the 2005 Raceway Park karting season will get underway with the road course opener set for March 13. Alex is pleased to announce that the third edition of the 3 day Spring Karting Championships presented by National Kart News will take place for road course racers on Friday, Saturday & Sunday May 27, 28, & 29. Great news for kart racers everywhere. . . CONDOLENCES TO THE family of A.J. Richard of the P.C. Richard & Son electronics and appliance store family, who died recently at age 95. Mr. Richard is the son of P.C. Richard, the founder of the business in 1909, starting in a Brooklyn hardware store. There are now 49 P.C. Richard & Son locations in New York and New Jersey. Mr. Richard is survived by two sons, Peter and Gary, the company CEO, eight grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Our Lady of Consolation, 111 Beach Drive, West Islip, New York 11795 and the HEED Foundation, 205 South Service Road, Plainview, New York 11803. . .
