SMITHTON, PA (Aug. 26) - Richard Mitchell became the leading winner of 2005 in the Napa NASCAR Super Late Model division, by claiming his seventh feature victory on Dick’s Sporting Goods Night at Motordrome Speedway. Other repeat winners on Friday August 26 were George P. Nicola (Smail Pontiac-GMC Modifieds), and division point standing leaders Frank Turek (Subway Street Stocks), Jeff Giles (Yellow Book Chargers), and Ed Dinneen (Advance Auto Parts American Flyers).
Former Motordrome Champion and NASCAR Northeast Region Champion Richard Mitchell captured his division-leading seventh win in the Napa NASCAR Super Late Model 35-lap feature. Starting second, the Bruceton Mills, WV resident darted around rookie Chad Hemphill as the green flag waved, and led all but one lap. By lap two, Garry Wiltrout advanced from sixth to second, and on lap three Rick Miller claimed third after starting ninth. Heat race winner and tenth starter Bobby Henry raced to fourth, placing all four of the seasons biggest winners in the top spots by lap four. Wiltrout led lap five, as an intense battle raged with Mitchell, as Miller watched from close behind. On lap six, Wiltrout spun in the center of the back straight, bringing out the caution flag. The restart order of Mitchell, Miller, and Henry would remain in the podium positions for the rest of the event, while Wiltrout would battle back into fourth place by the conclusion of the race. Mitchell’s win separated him from a tie with Miller at six victories each atop the win column. Veteran John Komarinski had a stellar drive, placing fifth at the checker. Points leader Miller, seeking his third straight track championship, won the Valvoline Hard Charger Award and the Top Dog Challenge Dash. Henry, third in the event, is second in the championship standings with three points races remaining.
The Smail Pontiac-GMC Modified feature was a thriller, although the scorecard shows winner George P. Nicola led all 20 laps. Starting from the pole, Nicola first held off heat race winner John Pribanich, then fought tooth-and-nail with points leader Adam Kostelnik for 17 laps. Kostelnik tried all angles in the attempt to make a winning pass, but Nicola thwarted the efforts to claim his fourth victory of the season. The duo made no contact in the clean, exciting, race, which was delayed a few moments by a light rain shower, that forced extra parade-laps to dry the track surface. Kostelnik, who was several times alongside the leader, won his heat earlier in the night and placed second by only a car-length. Todd Knight, making his first start in a Modified this year placed third. Mike Bakalon started twelfth, and finished fourth, earning the Valvoline Hard Charger award. Defending Charger division Champion Bob Shipp placed fifth.
Frank Turek showed why he is the dominant feature winner and points leader in the Subway Street Stock division. Starting second, Turek ruled the entire 20-lap distance, perhaps sealing his second-straight division championship title. Turek, of Mount Pleasant, PA, also won a heat race earlier in the evening. He has won more heats than any driver in any division at Motordrome in 2005. Dave Tavormina started seventh and climbed to second with just two laps to go, earning the Valvoline Hard Charger Award. Third at the finish was fourth-starting Robin Rimel, who won his heat in the preliminary portion of the program. Shawn Phillips continued a perfect record of top-five finishes in each of his starts this season by placing fourth, and Rich Burbidge earned a top five finish.
Yellow Book Charger division points leader Jeff Giles, Jr. started the 15-lap feature from sixth and made a winning pass on lap three, over Tracy Keller. Giles, of Vanderbilt, PA, added to his division-leading victory total and won the Valvoline Hard Charger Award. Keller, second to Giles in the championship standings, also placed second on the race track Friday night after leading two circuits. Jim Nolker had his best showing of 2005 placing third in the feature. Victor Keller drove to a fourth place finish and heat race winner Bryan Shipp claimed fifth position.
Ed Dinneen, of Wilkinsburg, PA, was another division points leader to find victory lane. Dinneen, made it a clean sweep as he won the heat race, the Valvoline Hard Charger Award, and the feature in the Advance Auto Parts American Flyers division. Matt Gardner led four laps of heat race action, and three laps of feature racing, but placed second at the finish. Richie Miller placed third, ahead of Larry Vance and Roger Bryan.
