UPS, NASCAR Drive Home
and Radio Public Service Announcements Encourage Safety Awareness
for Race Fans of All Ages
In an effort to raise safety awareness on Halloween, UPS (NYSE:
UPS) is enlisting the help of No. 88 UPS Ford driver Dale Jarrett
and the Universal Studios' Monsters. The company is launching a
national broadcast public service campaign to stress the need for
extra vigilance when kids are trick-or-treating.
Last August, UPS, Universal Studios and Action Performance
unveiled a new "UPS Meets the Universal Studios' Monsters"
program on www.racing.ups.com. The Halloween promotion extends
that effort with TV and radio public service announcements that
encourage viewers and listeners alike to visit the UPS Racing Web
site for a list of Halloween safety tips. NASCAR enthusiasts also
will find articles and photo galleries of key program events,
images of the special Halloween paint scheme and more.
"These public service announcements communicate the
importance of safety, which UPS drivers always put first in
everything they do," said Jarrett. "Through our
collaboration with Universal Studios' Monsters and Action-Performance,
we hope to raise awareness for pedestrians and motorists alike to
make this a fun and safe Halloween for everyone."
Safety at UPS predates the big, brown truck since UPS management
developed safety guidelines for the company's bicycle messengers
nearly 100 years ago. Today, UPS drivers log more than 2 billion
miles per year and are among the safest on the roads with an
average of less than one accident for every million miles driven.
UPS aggressively monitors safety objectives and continuously
improves safety practices, both on and off the road, through
enhanced training programs, new equipment and facility
modifications. In fact, the ongoing effort represents investments
totaling more than $180 million over the past five years.
The foundation for UPS's safe driving program emphasizes the
importance of space and visibility when driving. Known as the
Five Seeing Habits, these proven methods are a proactive approach
to avoiding accident situations, especially on Halloween night:
- Aim High In Steering:
Look as far down the road as possible to uncover
important traffic information to make appropriate
- Get The Big Picture:
Maintain the proper following distance so you can
comfortably determine the true hazards around your
vehicle. Don't tailgate others.
- Keep Your Eyes Moving:
Scan - don't stare. Constantly shift your eyes while
driving. Active eyes keep up with changing traffic
- Leave Yourself An Out:
Be prepared. Surround your vehicle with space in front
and at least on one side to escape conflict.
- Make Sure They See
You: Communicate in traffic with your horn,
lights and signals to establish eye contact with
motorists and pedestrians. Be reasonably sure of people's
Coinciding with UPS's Halloween
initiative is the company's annual recognition of safe drivers
through the UPS Circle of Honor. This program rewards UPS drivers
who have achieved 25 years or more of safe driving. During "National
Drive Safe to Work Week," the second week in October, UPS
recognized the 3,603 active members -- including 232 new
inductees -- in a special USA Today two-page advertisement.
Action Performance, the leader in the design, promotion,
marketing and distribution of licensed motorsports merchandise,
will produce commemorative die-cast replicas of the No. 88/UPS
Universal Studios' Monsters Ford Taurus for the trick or treater
of any age. These collectibles, as well as other related
memorabilia, will be available through Action's usual
distribution channels including the online UPS Racing Store.
UPS has been the official express delivery company of NASCAR
since 2000 and is in its fourth year as primary sponsor of the No.
88 UPS Ford Taurus driven by Dale Jarrett for Robert Yates Racing.
Building on the sport's growing popularity and fan loyalty, UPS
has been recognized for a strong marketing platform that links
its services to the speed, precision and reliability of NASCAR
racing. UPS continues to build new business opportunities
directly within the racing community, related automotive and
supplier industries and with new revenues through licensed
